Mid North Coast Correctional Centre (MNCCC)

Project Summary

Located 14km west of Kempsey and 455km north of Sydney, the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre was established in 2004 and currently holds around 550 maximum/medium and minimum security male and female inmates.

With the State's prison population rising and existing correctional centres approaching capacity, this centre will be expanded to include an additional 440 new beds for male inmates delivered on existing Corrective Services NSW land. As part of the NSW Government's $3.8 billion Prison Bed Capacity Program, this expansion will deliver a prison system that operates more efficiently, has a greater focus on inmate rehabilitation, maintains safety and security and increases accountability.

In addition to 440 new beds, the new facilities at the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre will also consist of:

  • Modifications to the gatehouse and administration building; and
  • Supporting infrastructure including car parking, staff facilities, programs, industries, inmate processing and a clinic for the new medium-security compound.

The expansion will create between 200 and 350 jobs during construction and around 90 permanent new jobs when complete, with flow-on effects for local businesses.

Public comment and feedback for the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) took place in November 2016 and was completed by JBA Urban Development Consultants.  In December 2017, Watpac Ltd was awarded the tender to complete construction for the expansion. A site establishment notification will be distributed in February 2018 to the local residents to inform them of the upcoming work.

Further information about this expansion can be found under 'Updated News'.
