Located in Unanderra, the 60-bed Illawarra Reintegration Centre was delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Better Prisons initiative.
The Unanderra site was established as a weekend detention centre in 1992 and later functioned as a Community Offender Support Program Centre, before closing in 2013.
The new centre is designed to give inmates nearing the end of their sentence the support they need to reintegrate successfully and break the cycle of offending. This includes training and work release opportunities.
Inmates also participate in intensive rehabilitative programs to help them address any offending behaviour and addiction, anger management and domestic violence issues.
The proposal was approved by the Department of Justice in August 2016 following a comprehensive review of environmental factors (REF). The REF documentation can be downloaded below. For security reasons, some diagrams have been removed.
