Shortland's new 110-bed accommodation blocks are nearing completion.

Built as an extension to Cessnock Correctional Centre in 2011, Shortland provides maximum-security accommodation for up to 250 male inmates. Work to expand the centre to 580 beds began in October 2017.

The project will see three new modular accommodation buildings constructed to the west of the present facility, along with:

  • new sport and exercise areas
  • a new 4,000-square-metre industries building to provide gainful employment
  • new administration and stores buildings
  • upgrades to the gatehouse, as well as reception, visits and parking facilities.

The upgraded centre is expected to open in mid 2019.
