Three new cell blocks opened at Shortland Correctional Centre on 20 May 2019.

Inside one of the new 110-bed accommodation blocks at Shortland.

Shortland opened in 2011 as a maximum-security extension to the adjacent Cessnock Correctional Centre. In 2017, work began to increase Shortland's capacity from 250 to 580 beds.

The expansion project included:

  • three new 110-bed cell blocks
  • new sport and exercise areas
  • a new 4,000-square-metre industries building to provide gainful employment
  • new administration and stores buildings
  • upgrades to the gatehouse, as well as reception, visits and parking facilities.
