Legal Aid / Prisoners Legal Services

Prisoners Legal Service (PLS) is a specialist service of Legal Aid NSW and provides a range of services to prisoners.

  1. PLS visits most NSW gaols and provides free and confidential legal advice and minor assistance in matters like:
    • bail
    • applications for legal aid
    • appeals and parole
    • classification and other prison issues
    • family law
    • victims compensation and restitution
    • personal injury, fines and debt
  2. PLS can also represent prisoners at:
    • hearings at the State Parole Authority (ie. hearings for parole and revocations of parole, home detention and periodic detention)
    • life sentence determinations
    • segregation appeals
    • visiting justice hearings.
  3. PLS also participates in gaol workshops at gaols showing the Back On Track legal educational DVDs.

How to contact PLS

Prisoners who need an interview with a solicitor from the PLS should ask the gaol's wing officer, the area manager or welfare to put their name down in the "Legal Aid Book".  On the next visit (usually every 2 or 3 weeks) the names in the book will be paged to come for a legal visit.  If the gaol is not visited by PLS, prisoners can contact PLS for telephone advice or request an audio visual conference (an AVL).

Prisoners can contact PLS on the Common Auto Dial List (CADL) as a free call - just press 11# (Legal Aid) or 02# (LawAccess) and ask for PLS or Prisoners Legal Service.

Friends and family of prisoners can contact the PLS on Tel: (02) 8688 3888 or Fax: (02) 8688 3895.
