Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC)

The NSW Government has approved Corrective Services NSW to proceed with the planning and design of an additional 440 beds at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC) at the Silverwater Correctional Complex.

A Review of Environmental Factors (REF) is underway. The REF considers such matters as socio-economic impacts, impacts on the amenity of neighbours as well as environmental and traffic impacts.

The expansion is part of a $3.8 billion infrastructure plan for the state’s prison system to deal with the increasing inmate population. New facilities are required to accommodate prisoners safely and securely.

The project consists of:

  • New accommodation, made up of 4 x 110 bed units;
  • A primary health centre;
  • Program and interview facilities;
  • Indoor and outdoor recreational areas;
  • A laundry and food services area;
  • A refurbishment of the inmate property store;
  • A refurbishment and expansion of the visits area;
  • An expansion to the staff and visitor car parks; and
  • General upgrades to existing facilities.

Site of proposed MRRC expansion

This expansion will deliver a fit-for-purpose facility, and provide a safe environment for correctional staff and inmates.
