Nearly 17 years with Corrective Services NSW
No matter what he did in life, Shane Kemp was determined to give something back to his community.
Working with young adult Aboriginal men at the Brewarrina Yetta Dhinnakkal Centre, in north western NSW, the 48-year-old Assistant Superintendent has been given that chance.
It is a labour of love for Mr Kemp, who left NSW Police after eight years to join Corrective Services NSW to "make a difference".
"I really love my job - I love the different challenges we face each day and working at Yetta Dhinnakkal," he says.
"Being of Aboriginal heritage myself, it gives me a chance to connect with these young fellas and hopefully stop them from reoffending.
"We're empowering them with skills and qualifications to go into the community and be better citizens."
Mr Kemp joined CSNSW in 2000 as a Court Escort Officer, before transferring to Broken Hill Correctional Centre, working his way up the ranks, and moving to Yetta Dhinnakkal in 2014.
Yetta Dhinnakkal is from the language of the traditional owners of the land, the Ngemba people, meaning 'Right Pathway' – and Mr Kemp does everything in his power to ensure his work lives up to the centre's name.
"I'm here to be a manager of a centre that provides extensive training, to ensure that we get these young offenders out there and towards a better life in their communities," he says.
"A positive outcome is when one trainee who we had here worked to obtain his machinery tickets and licences, and was approached by a company looking for a delivery driver when he was released.
"Now he has a full time job driving trucks and forklifts to support his young family - he is one of our success stories."
Mr Kemp also strives to be a positive role model by attending school information days, speaking about CSNSW careers at recruitment drives for the Rapid Build Prisons and giving back what he can to the community.
He says the key to being a good correctional officer is to keep an open mind and accept the challenges the job can throw at you at the unexpected times.
